The 14th Street corridor is booming, and its bus service has not kept up. In last five years the number of businesses along this corridor have doubled to over 14,000. On an average weekday over 15,000 riders take the current 14th Street buses, making them among the most used in the region.
Bus service has not kept pace. The current lines stop too often, get backed up and spread out, and congestion and ride times are getting worse. This is only exacerbated by the work being done on Beach Drive and the Metro system's struggles.
It doesn't have to be this way. Express bus service could shorten commutes for thousands, better connect communities to jobs, and stimulate revenue and taxes in the area. WMATA already has the plans, they just need $1.4 million in the budget to implement them.
