For years Dupont Circle has had a gaping canyon just north of where Connecticut Ave passes under the circle, creating a very divided space. Now the District Department of Transportation is designing a new park space that will sit above the roadway and could create a vibrant new destination in the neighborhood.
The project is in the early design stages, but out of the options it's clear that the piazza/"shared street" design will create a truly walkable space that prioritizes pedestrians and community space over cars. The piazza creates a park at the same level as the existing sidewalks that pedestrians, bicycles, scooters would all share. It retains the service lanes as a shared space, and eliminates most if not all of the parking.
We also surveyed GGWash readers, and many wanted to go a step further and close the service lanes entirely. We are calling on DDOT to further study that option as our fundamental goal is making the piazza a place which prioritizes people over cars.
