Right now in Prince George’s County, it’s basically illegal to build and rent out new backyard cottages or accessory apartments (such as a basement unit or a converted garage). Changing those rules and allowing more accessory apartments could provide extra income for homeowners who are struggling to make ends meet. It also creates more flexible and affordable housing in the region.
There's a chance to legalize these kinds of homes through the county's Comprehensive Housing Strategy, which is under development right now. This process is still in the early stages, so the time to get in there and shape it is NOW!
RSVP and let us know which of the upcoming community meetings you can go to. Participants will learn more about the Comprehensive Housing Strategy process and will give feedback on the priorities and direction of the plan. We'll make sure to send you updates and resources as we continue to advocate together for these homes!
